better, but not yet a return to happy days. Cinematographic attendance has straightened in 2022 in France, but remains far from the pre-Cavid low water. According to statistics from the National Center for Cinematography and Animated Image (CNC), published Monday January 2, 152 million spectators found the Room Last Year, which represents an increase of 59.2 % per Report to 2021 – Year marked by 138 days of closing the rooms, until May 19. However, this result remains down 28.5 % compared to 2019 when the attendance hid to 213.2 million admissions. The fall diminishes somewhat at 26.9 %, if we take the average of the 2015-2019 period as a comparison.

“This positive dynamic should continue throughout the year 2023, thanks to a dense and diverse films offer to gradually reconnect with the levels before the health crisis”, we hope National Federation of French Cinemas.

Three slowdowns

The Comscre analysis company noted three sensitive slowdowns of attendance last year: between mid-January and at the end of February, due to the new threat of the COVID-19 wave. Then between mid-July and at the end of September, where the spectators, for lack of attractive offer, shunned the rooms. Summer was thus marked by a program of American films “too sparse” and “disappointing results for certain French films”, estimates Comscore, despite the huge success of Top Gun. Maverick, by Joseph Kosinski. Finally, between mid-November and early December, the usual decline was particularly pronounced, again for lack of films. Conversely, from March to mid-July, attendance has approached or reached forecast levels. And the end of the year ended in an encouraging way thanks to Avatar. The waterway, from James Cameron, who made the best start of the year, with 2.2 million admissions the first week.

“The attendance has found almost three-quarters of its pre-crisis level”, welcomed Dominique Boutonnat, president of the CNC. “It is a very encouraging result in a still atypical context. France records one of the best covers in the world, with a more limited comparative drop, for example, in the United States, in South Korea, at the Germany, Spain or Italy, “he added.
