Until the acquisition by Elon Musk, the social network had the strictest rules in terms of political advertising.
Tuesday, January 3, Twitter announced a relaxation of his Rule baning , for three years, almost all political advertisements on the social network. Advertisements for a “cause” will now be authorized again and, ultimately, electoral advertisements will also be. “We believe that advertisements for causes improve public discourse around important subjects,” writes the company.
Twitter has prohibited all political and electoral advertisements since 2019, by direct decision of the company’s co-founder, and president and chief executive officer at the time, Jack Dorsey. Mr. Dorsey had estimated that “the dissemination of a political message should be deserved, and not buy”.
weakening of all moderation rules
The other major social networks all authorize, with different limitations, political advertisements. The definition of what constitutes a “cause” or a political subject also varies from one platform to another, including on Twitter, which in practice authorized the advertisements of certain environmental associations or defending societal causes.
This reversal is one of the many changes established by Elon Musk since his repair of Twitter, all going in the direction of a relaxation or a removal of all the moderation rules on the platform. Mr. Musk thus removed the rules prohibiting disinformation on the COVVI-19, dismissed the vast majority of platform moderators, and reactivated the accounts of multiple far-right personalities.
