Some 90,000 police and gendarmes will be mobilized in France, including 5,400 in Paris, for New Years Night, after two years of restrictions due to COVID-19.

The “high and persistent level of terrorist threat” and “recent events that occurred in Paris against the Kurdish community” must “lead to the greatest vigilance”, writes the Minister of the Interior in a note addressed to the prefects. Gérald Darmanin asks the latter to foresee a “dissuasive, visible and on foot system”, associating the police and soldiers of the “Sentinel” operation.

Public transport will be particularly monitored and filtering points to access places of gatherings with excavation and palpations can be set up. Regarding urban violence, usually more frequent on the night of December 31, Gérald Darmanin asks “the systematically arrest of troublemakers”.

He also called to carry out operations to combat conduct under the empire of alcohol or narcotics, from the night of December 30. In Paris, 5,400 police and gendarmes will be mobilized, for its part, said the police headquarters. The device will be particularly reinforced on the Champs-Elysées, where the traditional fire fireworks is back. The Paris town hall is waiting for 500,000 people. The sale of alcohol to take away and its consumption on the public highway are prohibited from Friday evening to Monday morning in a perimeter defined around the Champs-Elysées. Traffic restrictions and public filtering points with excavations are also provided.
