New York Governor Katie Wolly approved the law on the right to independently repair technical devices.
The Law on Honest Repair of Digital Devices ( digital Fair Repair Act ) provides the owners of some technical devices and independent Service centers The right to receive spare parts from the manufacturer and independent repairs.
According to the law, manufacturers should provide documentation, schemes, details and tools for devices owners and repair workshops so that they can independently diagnose and repair equipment. The purpose of the law is to protect people from expensive repairs, increase the life of the device, and also reduce electronic waste.
In the current form, the law will be applied only to devices sold in New York after July 1, 2023. In addition, manufacturers can combine components together and offer customers sets of parts, and not individual parts.
Earlier, computer system researchers have found that electronics repair services do not use effective confidentiality protocols, and technical specialists often monitor customer data.
