European Nuclear Research Center (CERN) and the National Accelerating Laboratory named after Enriko Fermi, who at one time developed Scientific Linux, but then switched to the use of centos, announced about the choice of almalinux as a standard distribution for accompanying experiments. The decision was made due to changes in the policy of the Red Hat company regarding the maintenance of CentoS and prematurely folding support for the CentOS 8 branch, the release of updates for which was terminated at the end of 2021, and not in 2029, as users suggested.
It is noted that when testing the almalinux distribution showed excellent compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and other assemblies. Of the advantages, the operational release of updates, a long term of support, development with the involvement of the community, expanded support of hardware architectures and the provision of metadata about eliminated vulnerabilities are also called. Scientific Linux 7 and Centos 7 will continue to be maintained until the end of the distribution data in June 2024,
