Pension reform: “family dinner” where Emmanuel Macron held 65 -year line

With the leaders of the presidential coalition, the Head of State reaffirmed his desire to postpone the legal retirement age to 65 years. He intends to bring his reform to pass in a bill for financing social security.

At Elyée on Wednesday, December 7, dinner looked like already. The menu, it is true, was almost identical to the one that was offered to the guests two months earlier. Just like the agenda offered to them: pensions. But the head of state wanted to “stall the method”, explains a participant of these feasts.

Emmanuel Macron, his Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, the president of the Modem, François Bayrou, the secretary general of the Renaissance party, Stéphane Séjénéné, the leaders of the macronists in the Assembly and in the Senate, Aurore Bergé and François Patriat , as well as the mayor Horizons du Havre, Edouard Philippe, supported by the most active of the retirees of politics, Richard Ferrand, former president of the National Assembly, therefore found themselves in one of the salons on the ground floor of the Elysée to speak, once again, of the essential reform and, perhaps, the most delicate of the second five-year term. By their side, the Minister of Labor, Olivier Dussopt.

At the end of September, Emmanuel Macron had sold, in particular, against François Bayrou who, dreading a social discontent, had pleaded to leave time for consultation. Two months have passed and if passing points have been identified on long careers, minimum pensions, the use of seniors, the question of the retirement age at 65 remains a red line. These two months were useful, said the Prime Minister. But to wait more would be useless, thinks the president.

“stopped calendar”

Back of an international tour, Emmanuel Macron was described as “reassembled”, “lively” and “combative”. The Elysian supper had to demonstrate it: the head of state no longer wants to procrastinate. “I remain fully mobilized on national subjects,” he warned in Paris Match on the presidential plane which brought him back from Louisiana, to the United States. The mayor of Pau may have persisted, claiming more “pedagogy” concerning a reform that the population has, in his eyes, still not understood, no stay no longer seems possible. Despite the use of Latin quotes supposed to argue his positions, the centrist was prayed by the Head of State to do this work of explanation of text himself, like the other members of the majority. “You are my guests,” said the tenant of the Elysée, a bit annoyed.

The calendar is therefore arrested. The reform will be presented in the Council of Ministers on January 11 or 18, 2023 for a visit to the Assembly and then to the Senate between February and March and an entry into force provided for in the summer of 2023.
