After the revelations of the “world” and its partners on the confinement of several dozen people, the European agency ensures that it wants to “examine allegations”.
The European border guards (Frontex) announced on Thursday, December 8, that it was going to examine information that Bulgarian police have locked up migrants in a cage. Facts for which the UN expressed its “concern”.
An investigation, carried out MO12345LEMONDE, the collective of journalists Lighthouse Reports and several European media, reveals that refugees have been locked in a makeshift cage on the Bulgarian border with Turkey “under the gaze” of the agents of Frontex.
“Frontex deals with seriously any report of alleged violations of fundamental rights,” the agency (AFP) told the agency based in Warsaw. “The information you have communicated to us has been transmitted to the Fourtex fundamental rights office which will examine the allegations,” added Frontex in his email.
cage made up of iron bars and littered with trash
In five times, between October 15 and November 25, the partners of the world filmed the cage, visible from the street, made up of iron bars and strewn with trash. Each time, a dozen men were detained there. MO12345LEMONDE questioned four men – from the Syrians and the Afghans – who explain “to have been locked up following their attempt to enter Bulgaria”. Still according to the survey, video sequences show a visible fronted car near the cage, in the Bulgarian city of sredets.
The European Agency told AFP that since last year, its rights office had recorded ten “serious incidents” which would have occurred on the Bulgaro-Turque border. “One refers to the sredets area but is not at all linked to the conditions at the border guards”, underlines Frontex.
The United Nations Agency for Refugees, UNHCR, for its part indicated to AFP that its representatives have not seen the images in question and could not comment them, but that they were ” deeply concerned about these allegations “.
“We urge the states concerned to investigate all the allegations of violations and abuses,” said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. “The UNHCR is ready to support states and the European Commission in the implementation of independent surveillance mechanisms for monitoring and investigating such incidents,” he said.
