Following the revelations of the world on the conditions of the sinking of migrants in November 2021, in which 27 people had perished in the English Channel, the government tried to delay. “Obviously, if these facts are proven, if these people were in French waters and if at any time there has been a breach, an error, the sanctions will be taken,” assured the secretary of state in charge of the Sea, Hervé Berville, Thursday, November 17 in front of the National Assembly.

Monday, Le Monde revealed that the passengers of a makeshift boat who was sinking in the night of November 23 to 24, 2021 off Calais had called the French authorities on fifteen times to ask them to ‘Help, in vain. French help have waited for them to go through English waters and no rescue means were sent to them.

“Like you, like our fellow citizens, the reading of this article added dread to pain and tragedy,” the Secretary of State told deputies, on the sidelines of the examination of a Cooperation text between France and the United Kingdom. “A judicial inquiry is underway” and “the administration has also launched an internal investigation. There will also be the lessons to learn from it,” continued Mr. Berville.
