Egypt: activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah puts an end to his hunger strike

The pro -democracy blogger had started his action in April to protest against his imprisonment.

The Egyptian-British political detainee Alaa Abd El-Fattah wrote to his family that he was “no longer on hunger strike,” his sister Mona Seif announced on Tuesday, November 15. The latter has put online a photo of the letter given to its mother in the prison where her brother is incarcerated.

“The most important thing is that I want to celebrate my birthday with you Thursday (…) so bring a cake and provisions”, can be read in this letter dated Monday and broadcast on Twitter. “I stopped my strike. I will explain everything on Thursday,” he continues.

alaa Abd el-Fattah, a leading activist and blogger, was sentenced in December 2021 to five years in prison for dissemination of false news and started, on April 2, a hunger strike that has lasted for 220 days , in order to protest against his imprisonment and his conditions of detention.

The pro -democracy blogger swallowed only 100 calories per day for seven months, before stopping to eat on November 2. On November 6, at the opening of COP27 in Egypt, he decided not to drink either. On Monday, the Egyptian opponent family announced that she had received “proof of life”. “Alaa is alive, he says that he was drunk again on November 12,” shared his other sister Sanaa Seif in a tweet .
