Turkey has appointed an ambassador in Isräel on Friday, November 11 to Saturday, November 12 after a four -year vacancy, last stage of the complete takeover of diplomatic relations between the two countries announced in August.
Sakir Ozkan Torunlar was appointed to the post by presidential decree, according to the Turkish media. It is an experienced diplomat who was Consul General of Turkey in Jerusalem between 2010 and 2014.
After several months of warming, the two countries announced in August the complete recovery of their diplomatic relations and the return of ambassadors. Israel had appointed an ambassador to Ankara in September. 2> The Turkish president congratulated Benyamin Netanyahu
Relations between the two countries were tense in 2010 after the murderous assault on the Israeli forces against the Turkish ship Mavi-Marmara, which was trying to transport aid to Gaza, Palestinian enclave under Israeli blockade and controlled by Hamas Islamists.
In May 2018, after the death of around fifty Palestinians killed by the Israeli army in Gaza, Turkey recalled its ambassador to Tel Aviv and returned the Israeli ambassador to Ankara as well as the Israeli Consul General Istanbul. Israel had retaliated by returning the Turkish consul general to Jerusalem.
Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, also sent a letter of congratulations to Benyamin Netanyahu after his victory in the Israeli legislative elections of 1 er November, announced the services of the former Israeli Prime Minister. Mr. Erdogan, a fervent defender of the Palestinian cause, in the past criticized Israeli policies with regard to the Palestinians led under the governments of M. Netanyahu (1996-1999 and 2009-2021).
