The observation is alarming. The United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) published a report Thursday, November 3, on the state of glaciers listed as World Heritage of Humanity. They represent 10 % of the glacial sites of the earth and can therefore be considered as representative of the overall state of the glaciers. According to UNESCO, a third of these classified glaciers will have disappeared in 2050, and half in 2100. The study adds that if global warming is limited to 1.5 ° C compared to pre -industrial levels, “two remaining thirds could be saved “.

According to the study, the melting of glaciers has been accelerating since the year 2000 for around 60 % of glaciers listed as World Heritage. The glaciers most affected by the cast iron are the one located in the Yunnan, China, which has lost 57.2 % of its mass since 2000, and those of the Los Aleces National Park, in Argentina, which lost 45, 6 % of their mass in twenty years.

UNESCO believes that the only way to slow down glaciers around the world is to “considerably reduce carbon emissions”.
