Le Monde investigated them in partnership with the OCRP (Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project), an international network of investigative journalists.
Documents that we have authenticated, as well as customs statements between Russia and Sudan, show how Wagner’s men, a paramilitary group close to Vladimir Putin, settled in the country. They also reveal the high level of collusion between the Russian mercenaries and part of the Sudanese political and military power.
The objective? Take advantage of the country’s golden resources, the third producer of Africa, without reversing any percentage in Sudan as the law requires. In exchange, Russia, via Wagner, provides Sudanese authorities with ordering order and men for the formation of its soldiers.
