“New York Times” correspondent in Kinshasa who was missing

According to an association of journalists, Steve Wembi remains “not found” after a “roundup” led by “agents presented as belonging to the National Information Agency”.

The Association of Correspondents of the International Press (ACPI) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) expressed “its lively concerns”, Tuesday October 25, after the disappearance since the evening of one of its members, correspondent for the New York Times.

Congolese journalist Steve Wembi was targeted by “a roundup [carried out] by agents presented as belonging to the National Intelligence Agency [ANR]”, said ACPI in a press release. He “was worried in a hotel [in the center of Kinshasa], but remains untraceable so far,” added the association. A reporter also told AFP, under the cover of anonymity, having seen Steve Wembi to be embarked by these men in front of this hotel in a white jeep.

“He has never been arrested by the services, in any case, I took my phone since yesterday to check,” said Congolese communication minister on Tuesday evening on Tuesday evening and -Government spokesperson, Patrick Muyaya, evoking on the other hand a man “in clandestine”, without more details.
