The Savoyard capital experiences the extinction of its public lighting between midnight and 5 am. Its decision is welcomed by the Chartreuse regional natural park, in which 62 % of the municipalities already apply this measure.
Now in Chambéry, walkers and night workers will no longer be able to count on the lighting of the lampposts between midnight and 5 am to accompany their steps. The Savoyard capital made, Saturday October 15, a “big leap into the void”, in the words of the deputy mayor of the city responsible for the ecological transition, Jimmy Bâabâa (various left). And this extinction of the Enlightenment turns out to be obvious for this city of 59,000 inhabitants.
The economic argument has obviously played for the municipality, in research like all communities of new budgetary rooms for maneuver. “I had pushed the project a little a year and a half ago to the municipal council,” explains Bâabâa. But “it is easier today that three months ago to make this measure accepted to the population,” he admits. He notably noticed that the drought of this summer and the calls for sobriety, especially from the government, had an effect on the inhabitants and that more and more of his fellow citizens have asked to act in this direction.
The economy carried out would be 200,000 euros per year, according to the municipality, with an electricity at a constant price, while the power of the lampposts had already been reduced by 30 % for ten years, and 50 % Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. since the start of the year.
The other argument arguing in favor of this measure concerns the fight against light pollution and the protection of biodiversity. “Chambéry is a luminous spot in the middle of two mountain ranges, adds Bâabâa. We have this duty, given our positioning. And we need more territories to commit to there is a real impact. “
The municipality has still decided to maintain night lighting at the Curial Carré, the city district where bars and nightclubs are brought together and where the police must regularly intervene. “It is important to give investigators the possibility of doing their job,” said Bâabâa. Discussions were thus carried out on this subject with the prefecture and the Chambéry prosecutor’s office, which asked for this exception. The video surveillance will remain effective continuously throughout the city thanks to an infrared system.
“attentive” to the remarks of the inhabitants
“We want to advance collectively and with serenity, especially with people less convinced by the initiative and more hesitant”, adds Jimmy Bâabâa, whose “first fear” in the face of this measure concerns, “more than the attacks”, The accidents that cyclists or pedestrians could have due to a fall against a sidewalk, for example.
