A light at the end of the pipeline? On the thirteenth day of strike in Totalnergies refineries, Monday October 10, 30 % of the service stations in France-and half in Ile-de-France-were short of one or all fuel (compared to 21 % Saturday), according to the Ministry of Energy Transition; But during the weekend, the CGT and the Directions of Totalenergies and Esso-Exxonmobil took a step towards the other to unlock a situation that worries the government and exasperates motorists. Social movements in refineries resulting in shortages of petrol and diesel, which put economic activity upon stop, are the most sensitive politically conflicts, with the strikes at the SNCF and the blocking of the main axes by the truckers .

The strike had been renewed on Saturday October 8, in three Totalnergies refineries and the two Exxonmobil sites – almost all of the French refining capacities. The movement is suspended in Donges (Loire-Atlantique) “until the beginning of next week”, and at the Grandpuits fuel deposit (Seine-et-Marne), said Eric Sellini, CGT coordinator for the French company. The degradation of the situation prompted the government to authorize the circulation of tanker trucks on Sunday to supply the service stations, to mobilize strategic stocks and to push the oil tankers to open the negotiations.

Especially since the unions have started relaxation. At the forefront of the conflict, the CGT dropped on certain claims on Saturday, in an open letter addressed to the CEO of Totalenergies, Patrick Pouyanné, repelled his claims on job creations and investments in France. On the other hand, it maintains its request for a salary increase of 10 %, 7 % of which are catching up with inflation and 3 % for the redistribution of group profits, which reached $ 10.6 billion in the first half of .

union opening

A union opening and strong government pressures that prompted Mr. Pouyanné to make a step towards a crisis. Totalnergies proposed, on Sunday, to advance in October the compulsory annual negotiations (NAO) on wages scheduled for November. But in the name of “responsibility”, these discussions will only be able to start after the “end of blockages” to allow the service stations to be restarted, specifies the company.

The French giant acknowledges that he will generate “exceptional results” in 2022. These negotiations must thus allow, according to his managers, to “define how employees will be able to [in] benefit, before the end of the year, while also taking into account the inflation of the year 2022 “. They affirm their “will that all employees have priority in the sharing of value and receive the right reward for their efforts on their pay sheet before the end of the year”. The employees of refineries have not had the feeling of being “priority” in recent weeks.
