Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s initiative, Bluesky, has plans to create a decentralized version of Twitter, with an open-source social networking protocol. The interface of Bluesky currently resembles Twitter, albeit with one key difference – a default chronological channel that users can switch to an algorithmic one. Despite lagging behind Twitter in several aspects such as the export of account data, Bluesky’s AT protocol, much like Mastodon’s ActivityPub, allows users to manage their own algorithms.
As per a report, Bluesky has already attracted 20,000 users, who were previously on a waiting list. The initiative expectedly aims to compete with Mastodon and other decentralized social networks in the future. Bluesky’s developers are currently working on refining the protocol’s approach, with a focus on scaling as well. Unlike Mastodon, Bluesky reportedly contains other key components such as the possibility of transferring an account, customisation and moderation functionalities, allowing users the freedom to transfer their profile to another client even if their content or accounts get blocked.
It must be noted that the social network is prohibited in the Russian Federation.
