Ubuntu 23.04 ‘Lunar Lobster’ has been released as an intermediate update that will receive support until January 2024. The release includes installation images for Ubuntu, Ubuntu Server, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Studio, Xubuntu, Ubuntukylin (editorial office for China), Ubuntu Unity, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Cinnamon.
One of the main changes in the release is the desktop update before the GNOME 44 release, which includes transferring applications to use GTK 4 and Libadwaita libraries. This includes the translation of GNOME Shell and MUTTER composite manager to GTK4, among other things. Additionally, the file selection dialogue now includes a mesh of icons and numerous changes have been made to the configurator. The Bluetooth control section has been added to the quick change menu of the settings.
In the Ubuntu Dock panel, application icons now include a mark of tags with a counter of unenvisable notifications generated by the application. Furthermore, the official editions include the assembly of Ubuntu Cinnamon, which offers the user environment Cinnamon, built in the classic GNOME 2 style.
The release also brings back the official Edubuntu assembly, providing a selection of educational programs for children of different ages. Additionally, a new minimalist assembly of Netboot has been added, which is only 143 MB in size. The assembly can be used for recording on CD/USB or for dynamic download via UEFI HTTP. The assembly provides a text menu that allows users to choose the Ubuntu editorial office, and the installation image for it will be loaded into RAM.
