Ubuntu Sway Remix 23.04, a distribution based on the mosaic composite manager Sway, has been released and is now available for download. This unofficial version of Ubuntu 23.04 is aimed at both experimental GNU/Linux users and beginners who want to try out the environment of mosaic window managers without having to spend too much time configuring. Assemblies for architectures AMD64 and ARM64 (Raspberry Pi) can be downloaded from the Ubuntu Sway website.
The distribution environment is based on Sway – a composite manager that uses the Wayland protocol and is fully compatible with the mosaic window manager i3, as well as the Waybar panel, PCMANFM-GTK3 file manager, and utilities from the project nwg-shell, such as the desktop wallpaper Azote, full-screen applications menu nwg-drawer, utilities for displaying scripts on the screen nwg-wrapper, and the manager settings of topics of GTK, cursor, and fonts nwg-look. Additionally, the distribution also includes console applications and utilities, such as Musikcube musical player, Video -General Directer, and Ranger file manager, among others.
One of the features of the distribution is a complete refusal to use the SNAP package manager. All programs are supplied in the form of ordinary Deb packets, including the Firefox web browser, for which the official PPA-REPAROMENT MOZILLA Team is involved. The distributor installer is based on the Calamares framework.
The major changes in this release include the update of Sway to version 1.8, which includes support for the Bindgesture command to attach actions to the gestures of the touchpad, supporting the extensions Wayland xDG-Activation-v1 and EXT-SESSION-LOCK-V1.
Overall, Ubuntu Sway Remix 23.04 provides users with an easy-to-use, configurable desktop experience that is accessible to users of all skill levels.
