Hyundai Motor Group to Launch Lunar Rover in 2027
Hyundai Motor Group has partnered with major Korean research institutes to begin construction of a lunar rover with the aim of launching it on the moon in 2027. This marks a new step in the development of space mobility beyond ground and air mobility, according to Kim Yong Va, Head of Hyundai Motor and the Center for Planning and Coordination of Research and Development Kia.
Expected to feature a solar charging system, autonomous driving capabilities, temperature control, and radiation protection, the vehicle will also be capable of carrying up to 70 kg of useful load. Hyundai and its subsidiaries, including Kia and Hyundai Rotem, will develop and provide advanced robotics, camera and Lidar scanning, engine, wheels, suspension, digging and excavation equipment, and other forms of specialized technologies for the rover.
The end goal for the project is to create a universal mobile platform with the capacity to perform various scientific research on the moon. Initial tests of the lunar rover will begin in the second half of 2024, with a simulated lunar surface.
After testing, the lunar rover will take its place on the lunar South Pole for further exploration and scientific research.
