Full Functional Translation Capability Added to Linguist 5.0
The Linguist 5.0 has undergone an upgrade with the latest Bruser additions, providing a full-functional translation of highlighted and manually entered pages. The addition also includes bookmarks and wide configuration capabilities, allowing users to add their own translation modules on the settings page. The code is distributed under the BSD license and works in browsers based on Chromium, Firefox, and Firefox for Android.
Key changes in the new version include the implementation of full offline translation, which enables autonomous use of all Linguist translation possibilities without sending texts on the internet. The new built-in translation module integrates bergamot translator and requires only a one-time download of models for each direction of the translation, after which internet connection is not necessary. Bergamot is currently supporting languages such as English, Bulgarian, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, French, Czech, and Estonian.
In the public list of user modules of the translation API Binding, the project Tartunlp, Libretranslate and Lingva translate were added. A module for Chatgpt is also prepared. User Text-to-speech modules can now be implemented, as well as a tab with the history of translations to search for recently translated texts.
The interface of the extension has been translated into 41 languages, and Bing translator has been removed from the list of built-in modules due to unstable quality. The user interface was also improved with hotkeys for translating pages and auto-determination of the language of the pages in Hebrew. The problem of removing texts in all elements of the page with a quick switching state of the page translation was also fixed.
