Skolteh Institute, with the support of the NTI Foundation, has successfully developed Russia’s first domestic base station for the fifth generation of communications (5G), according to a statement by the Foundation’s press service. The project was created as part of the State Program “Digital Economy”, overseen by the Ministry of Cyphra of the Russian Federation. The total budget for the project was 342 million rubles, of which 300 million rubles were received as a state grant.
Over a period of 39 months, a leading research center worked on creating a software and hardware complex for 5G networks that meets the modern requirements of the industry. The software and samples of modules will be carried out in Russia by an industrial partner of the project on the applications of operators and other customers.
The base station supports key services of the fifth-generation technology and was created in full accordance with the international standards of 3GPP and Openran. It is comparable to modern samples of foreign equipment in terms of technical specifications, with a peak speed of mobile Internet that reaches 1.4 gigabits per second. Thanks to its modular design and modern functionality, the development has export potential, and several countries have already shown interest in the project.
According to the Foundation’s press service, “Last year, the decision successfully took a comprehensive testing in an independent laboratory with the participation of three ‘Big Four Operators’ under the control of the Open Network Technologies Association. Negotiations are underway with the players of the 5G pilot zones market. Launching. Launching. Launching. Launching. Projects are scheduled for 2023-2024.”
The Skolteh Institute plans to produce 100 units of the domestic development by the end of 2023 to meet the demand for the technology.
