IxSystems has announced the release of Truenas Scale 2.12.2, which uses the Linux nucleus and DEBIAN package base. The product by IxSystems, including Truenas, PC-BSD, Trueos, and Freenas, has been based on FreeBSD. Truenas Scale 2.12.2 can now be downloaded and used for free from the TrueNAS website. At 1.7 GB, the ISO-image size is reasonable. The initial texts of the specific assembly for Truenas Scale scenarios, the web interface, and layers are published on GitHub.
Truenas Core products are based on FreeBSD and Truenas Scale on Linux, and they develop in parallel using the general code base of tools and a common web interface. An additional edition based on the Linux nucleus has been provided to implement some ideas that cannot be achieved using FreeBSD. In 2009, Freenas separated and moved to the Linux nucleus and DEBIAN package base by the OpenMediavault distribution, which was not the first such initiative.
One of the significant improvements in Truenas Scale is the ability to create storage facilities in various nodes, while Truenas Core (Freenas) is designed as a solution based on one server. The use of isolated containers in Truenas Scale simplifies the infrastructure control and is suitable for creating program and determined infrastructure. In Truenas Scale, ZFS (openzfs) is used as a file system. Truenas Scale supports Docker containers, KVM virtualization, and ZFS scale to several components using a distributed Gluster file system.
For secure access, the connection can be made through VPN (OpenVPN). The storage can be deployed on one node before incrementally increasing the number of nodes in the future to match the needs, allowing gradual expansion horizontally. The nodes can further be used for providing services and launching applications in containers orchestrated through the Kubernetes platform or in virtual machines based on KVM.
In the new version of Truenas Scale, support for Truenas Enterprise equipment was added, and parameters for configuring SUDO were included in the screens of user settings and replication. Administrators can now utilize SSH services as an option.
