Rust Foundation changes trademark policy

RUST Foundation, the organization overseeing the Rust ecosystem, has released a new policy regarding trademarks associated with Rust and the Cargo package manager. The policy is open for review via a feedback form until April 16, after which the final version will be published.

The Rust programming language has been developed by Mozilla since 2015, but since the creation of the Rust Foundation in 2021, all trademarks and assets of the language have been transferred to the organization. AWS, Microsoft, Google, Mozilla and Huawei helped create the autonomous non-profit organization.

The new policy includes guidelines for the use of Rust-related trademarks. Developers are advised to use “RS” instead of “RUST” if unsure of compliance with the policy. Furthermore, use of the Rust name and logo for the sale or advertising of goods without obtaining approval is prohibited. There are also rules around demonstrating project support and the use of the Rust name and logo in corporate social media.

The Rust logo itself may not be modified, except for scaling. Future versions of the logo will consider current social movements such as Pride Month and Black Lives Matter. The use of firearm at Rust-related events is prohibited, following local sanitary restrictions and clear norms of behavior.

The trademark “Ferris” does not belong to the organization, and the organization is not authorized to limit its use.

All interested parties are encouraged to review the policy and provide feedback via the feedback form.
