PPP 2.5.0 Released 22 Years After Last Branch Formation

A new package release of PPP 2.5.0 has been published by the PPP-Project team, which includes an implementation of support for the PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) protocol. This protocol enables the organization of a communication channel using IPV4/IPV6 connection via sequential ports or by connecting a point of point Point such as dial-up. The release includes a background PPPD process that coordinates the connection, authentication, and settings of the network interface. In addition, it features auxiliary utilities PPPSTATS and PPPDUMP to help users manage their connections.

The project code is distributed under the BSD license and it is officially supported on Linux and Solaris. The package is also available with unaccompanied code for Nextstep, FreeBSD, Sunos 4.x, SVR4, TRU64, AIX, and Ultrix.

PPP 2.5.0 comes in response to the lack of significant updates to the project. PPP 2.4.0 was released twenty years ago, and this new release brings considerable changes to the protocol. Among the important improvements are:

  • Support for the Authentication protocol “peep” (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol).
  • Added support for downloading files with certificates and keys in PKCS12 format.
  • Assembly surrounding GNU Autoconf and Automake was proposed.
  • API is significantly redesigned to develop plugins to PPPD.
  • Continued support for the IPX protocol.
  • Installation of the executable PPPD file with the SUID Root flag is stopped.
  • Additional new features such as IPV6CP-NORMOTE, IPV6CP-NOSEND, IPV6CP-CREMOTENUMBER, IPV6-UP-SCRIPT, IPV6-Down-Script, Show-Opteerwins, IPCP-No-No-DDDRESS, IPCP-No-Saddorss, IPP-No-Saddors, IPCP-No-SDDs. Addresses and Nosendip, and granting the Linux platform the opportunity to set any data speed for a sequential port supported by the driver.
