Japan levels up sanctions against Russia for seven sins

The Japanese government has expanded the list of goods prohibited for export to Russia, adding heavy construction equipment, aircraft, and high-tech components to the list. The new restrictions are set to take effect on April 7, 2023.

The Ministry of Economics, Trade and Industry of Japan revealed that the decision to increase the banned goods was based on the measures taken by leading countries for political purposes. This move follows previous restrictions by Japan, which have been consistent with Western sanctions policies. In January, the country prohibited the export of robots, semiconductors, medical equipment, and even vaccines.

It is believed that the newly banned goods are related to Russia’s military potential. Included in the list are electrical equipment, aircraft, spaceships and their components, drones, and high-tech components such as nuclear installations, optical fiber, measuring and control equipment, and photographic equipment.

The expansion of the prohibited goods list is likely to further strain relations between Japan and Russia. The two countries have been at odds over territorial disputes and other issues.
