Rocky Linux 9.2, a free assembly RHEL aimed at replacing the classic CentOs, has been presented for release. The distribution is fully binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and serves as a replacement for RHEL 9.2 and CentOS 9 Stream. The Rocky Linux 9 branch is set to be supported until May 31, 2032. The installation ISO-images have been prepared for architectures x86_64, Aarch64, and S390X (IBM Z), while publication of assemblies for the architecture PPC64le (Power9) has been postponed due to identification of serious problems with the work of Python 3.9.
Live-assembly with the desktop GNOME, KDE, and XFCE has additionally been proposed and published for the architecture x86_64. Reductions in the work include getting rid of the Red Hat brand and removal of specific packages for RHEL, such as Redhat-*, Insights-Client, and Subscription-Manager-Migration*. A review of the list of changes can be seen in the announcement of RHEL 9.2. Specific changes for Rocky Linux include the supply in a separate repository of Openldap-servers-2.6.2 packages, and p packages for virtualization of networks developed in the repository.
Rocky Linux supports repositories such as CRB (Code Ready Builder with additional packages for PowerTools), rt (packets for work in real time), high availability, ResilientStorage, and saphana (packages for sap hana). The distribution is being developed under the protection of the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation (Resf), which is registered as a socially useful corporation.
