Russian Consortium to Study Safety of Linux Kernel Announced by RAS Institute
The Institute of System Programming of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) has officially announced the formation of a consortium that will focus on the study of the Linux kernel’s safety. The aim of the consortium is to organize the cooperation between academic institutes, IT companies and universities to create a Russian branch of this kernel and to increase the level of security of domestically developed operating systems and programs.
The consortium is part of the Technological Center for Research Study of the Linux kernel, which was established at the beginning of 2021. The development of the Russian branch of the kernel and its synchronization with the main core is among the activities of the center. Partners of the center include Basalt SPO, Open Mobile Platform, Red Soft, Rusbatech-Astra, Fintech, Yandex.obrako and others.
The main goal of the consortium is to monitor the implementation of safe development principles while working on the creation of the infrastructure for scientific and innovative activities. The consortium plans to attract more participants to work on the security of the Linux kernel. Currently, the technological center has applied 154 corrections to the main core, with the last batch of a hundred corrections introduced in February 2023. The average age of corrected problems is six years.
