Google has introduced a new feature to test assemblies of Chrome canary, that will be included in the upcoming Chrome 115 release scheduled on July 17. This latest addition now allows users to view the amount of memory consumed by each separate tab. By clicking on the “Memory Saver” button in the address line, information is displayed on the tab’s memory usage. This addition allows users to understand which sites are most intensive in consuming memory and to grasp how much memory was released when a specific tab is displaced.
The Memory Saver mode is already in use and significantly reduces the intake of RAM. It releases memory previously occupied by inactive tabs to provide necessary resources for processing currently visited sites. This is particularly useful when other applications are run in parallel that are also intensive in consuming memory. When moving tabs, their content is loaded automatically, thereby releasing memory for active tabs. This mode is included in the production memory-saving settings.
Google is currently testing the heuristic mode of displacement of tabs with a flag called “Chrome:// Flags/#Heuristic-Memory-Saver-Mode”. The test considers different factors in choosing which tab to displace. This feature allows users to disable the use of Memory Saver for selected sites if necessary.
The test mode is also available in the energy consumption-saving mode with the flag “Chrome:// Flags/#Battle-Saver-Mode-Available”. When activated, this mode helps to extend the battery life of devices when the battery charge level drops to 20%. Restrictions are placed on the background data usage, and visual effects are disabled for sites with animation and video.
These new features will significantly enhance the user experience by providing necessary resources for processing currently viewed sites and reducing memory consumption.
