OpenToonz 1.7, the latest version of the open-source 2D animation software, has been launched after a year of development. The software is an extension of the original professional package – TOONZ – used to animate Futurama and several Oscar-nominated films. The code for TOONZ was published under the BSD license in 2016, making it a free project.
OpenToonz boasts of plugins with machine-learning-based effects for stylising animations and creating distorted light effects seen in classic cartoons. The software also enables users to create custom panels.
New features in OpenToonz include support for image insertion using the exchange buffer, preproduction board tools for rental and scene management, a translucent mode for the main window, support for Haiku OS, and enhanced stage export capabilities. It also includes new visual effects such as Floor Bump FX IWA and FLOW FX, and sound formats for accelerated sound conversion from Fast Render to MP4. Moreover, the brush tool mode now has straight and triangular cursors, making it easier to use.
