Qualcomm Acquires Autotalks to Develop Vehicle-to-Everything Technology
Qualcomm, the mobile device chip manufacturer, has acquired Autotalks, an Israeli startup specializing in the development of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications. The move is part of Qualcomm’s plan to integrate V2X technology into its Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform. This will enable cars to exchange information with one another and the environment in real-time, providing data about road traffic, hazards, traffic directions, and more.
V2X communications is expected to enhance road safety and traffic optimization by reducing the likelihood of collisions between compatible cars. The acquisition amount and terms have not been disclosed, and the deal will still undergo regulatory checks.
Qualcomm is aiming to offer V2X technology to interested customers, including General Motors and Renault, both of which own several car brands. The integration of V2X technology into the Snapdragon Digital Chassis is expected to facilitate the widespread adoption of this technology across the world.
Qualcomm’s car chips business is among the largest in the industry, bringing in about $1.4 billion annually. However, it is facing tough competition from NVIDIA and Intel Mobileye, which are also actively developing technology for car manufacturers and unmanned taxi services.
