SCARF, the open software monitoring service, has released its quarterly report for Q1 2023, which contains statistics formed from data collected from approximately 2,000 packages with open software. During this period, 240 million downloads were made, representing an increase of 60% from Q4 2022. However, unique users who downloaded packages only increased by 5% to 6.2 million.
Russia is at the top of the list of countries with the greatest increase in open-source downloads, with a 3.2 times increase in Q1 2023 compared to the previous quarter. Ireland and the Netherlands tied for second place with a 2.9 times increase, and Belgium and Canada ranked third with a 2.4 times increase.
In terms of companies, Oracle, Apple, Cisco, Microsoft, General Motors, Dell, Intel, and Disney are the top eight with the highest number of downloads. The number of companies downloading open software increased by 18.5% compared to Q4 2022, while the number of enterprises decreased by 26%, which is explained by a large number of releases of commercial open projects in Q4 2022.
Appeals to the documentation, sites, and files of the Readme of open projects increased four times in Q1 2023, with the highest number of appeals being made by Apple, Cisco, Capital One, Oracle, Microsoft, Disney, Adobe, General Motors, Boeing, and Bank of America.
The number of container downloads also increased from 12.5 million to 27 million, while the number of companies loading containers increased by 7.2%.
SCARF analytics utilizes a reference holder provided by open project developers as a link for package download. The SCARF processor simultaneously executes the request and takes statistics into account. To track appeals to the documentation and sites, a picture-reader integrated into pages is used. The use of Scarf is carried out through the Scarf gateway, which is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license and written in Haskell.
