Apple Releases First Public “Quick” Security Correction
On May 1, Apple released the first public “quick” security correction aimed at eliminating vulnerabilities that pose a significant risk to users. The Rapid Security Response updates were developed as an intermediate update between usual iOS updates to provide important safety improvements sooner.
According to Apple’s notification, the Rapid Security Response updates provide corrections to the Safari web browser, Webkit infrastructure stack, and other important system libraries as soon as Apple finds a vulnerability. This prevents attackers from exploiting any potential vulnerabilities.
Apple says this feature is turned on by default and some quick corrections can be installed without rebooting. iOS Security Response is available for iOS 16.4.1, iPados 16.4.1, and MacOS Ventura 13.3.1. After installation, the update will add a letter to the version of the software (for example, iOS 16.4.1 (A)). However, devices with older software versions will not receive rapid security corrections. The corrections will be included in subsequent iOS updates.
Despite the benefits of this security update, some users experienced difficulties while installing it. The updates were loaded but not immediately installed. Fortunately, Apple resolved the issue a few hours after receiving the first complaints on online forums.
To activate this feature, detailed instructions can be found on the Apple Support website. It is refreshing to see companies like Apple taking steps towards ensuring the safety and security of their users.
