Langleid County (Wisconsin, USA) has experienced a “catastrophic program failure” following an alleged attack by the LockBit group.
On July 11, government agencies in the Langleid district of northern Wisconsin issued an urgent warning on social media regarding technical failures in their departmental systems. Although the sheriff initially denied any connection to cyber attacks, the LockBit extortion group later included the district on their list of victims on their website. The group threatened to release all stolen government data by August 1.
As a result of the cyber incident, all telephone lines in the county have ceased working. Calls to the emergency service line 911 will be redirected and managed accordingly. The local sheriff has provided a temporary phone number for those who require assistance.
LockBit’s announcement regarding the data leak can be found on their website.
These warnings were shared by the Langlada Department of Health, the Office for Emergency Situations of the Langlad district, and the police department of the Antig district. The district’s population consists of approximately 20,000 people.
In recent months, several cities across the United States, including Heyvard, Opend, Dallas, Lowell, and Ogast, have fallen victim to numerous significant cyber incidents. These incidents involved encryption, data theft, extortion, and the public release of citizens’ confidential information on open platforms.
It is worth noting that the LockBit group previously claimed responsibility for an attack on Nagoy Port, Japan’s largest and most bustling seaport. The extortion attack, which involved data encryption, severely impacted the operations of container terminals and also affected the Toyota Corporation.
Furthermore, at the end of June, LockBit announced that a group of hackers had successfully breached the TAIWAN SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING Company (TSMC), the world’s largest microcircuit manufacturer. The hackers have threatened to release the company’s confidential data on August 8 if a substantial ransom is not paid for the decryption of files.
