Chrome Develops Pre-Examination of Links in Pop-Up Window

Chrome developers accepted to include experimental capabilities “Link PreView”, allowing to display the window of the pages shown when entering the cursor on a link or holding presses on the link.

The window is displayed on top of the contents in a form similar to showing a video in the “picture in picture” and allows you to fluently evaluate the contents without its opening in a separate window or tab. If necessary, more detailed familiarization with the information is given the possibility of transferring the pre-examined site to a separate tab or to the side panel.

The project is developing Takashi Toyoshima, one of the developers of the mechanism of proactive drawing of the contents prender, which complements the possibility of proactive loading (Preload) most likely for the transition of links. The difference boils down to the fact that in addition to loading the pages, their contents are drawn in a buffer without waiting for the user’s actions, which allows you to provide an instant display of the resource after click. Prender is so far only used to pretend to draw the contents of the recommendations in the OMNIBOX address line. Link Preview expands the use of Prender and allows you to use it not only to prepare for the instant opening of a new page, but also for pre-viewing.

The implementation of Link Preview is at the stage of an experimental prototype available in the form of patches, but so far, the review of the Chromium project has not been included in the repository of the project. Details of the implementation have not yet been approved and the discussion of issues related to ensuring confidentiality and security
