Release of NST 38, a Network Security Toolkit, Facilitates Network Security and Monitoring
After a year of development, NST (Network Security Toolkit) has announced the release of version 38, also known as “Life-Disintections” [1]. This release is specifically designed for network security and monitoring purposes [2]. The bootable ISO image (x86_64) of the release is 4.8 GB [3]. Fedora Linux users can utilize a dedicated repository to install all the systems created as part of the NST project. The distribution is built on the Fedora base and supports the installation of additional packages from external repositories compatible with Fedora Linux [4].
The NST 38 distribution includes a wide range of applications related to network security, including popular tools such as Wireshark, NTOP, NESSUS, SNORT, Nmap, kismet, tcptrack, etherape, nsttracroute, and ettercap, among others [5]. To streamline the management and automation of these utilities, NST has prepared a special web interface that also integrates the web-frontend for the WireShark network analyzer [5]. The graphical environment of the distribution is based on FLUXBOX [5].
New Features and Updates in NST 38:
- The package base of NST 38 is synchronized with Fedora 38, incorporating the Linux 6.3 core [6].
- Fresh releases of the included applications have been updated [7].
- A separate container based on Docker has been introduced to provide access to vulnerabilities through tools like OpenVAS (Open Vulnerability Assessment Scanner) and Greenbone GVM (Greenbone Vulnerability
