MX Linux 23 Released, a Lightweight Distribution
MX Linux 23 has been published, a new lightweight distribution that is the result of collaboration between the communities formed around Antix and Mepis. The release is based on the Debian package base with improvements from the Antix project and packages from its own repository. MX Linux 23 utilizes the sysvinit initialization system and incorporates its own tools for system configuration and expansion. The distribution is available for download in 32-bit and 64-bit assemblies with various desktop options, such as XFCE, KDE, and Fluxbox.
New Features in MX Linux 23:
- Synchronization with the DEBIAN 12 package base has been implemented, and applications have been updated. The default initialization system remains as sysvinit, but SystemD can be installed as an alternative.
- The user environment has been updated to xfce 4.18, Fluxbox 1.3.7, and KDE Plasma 5.27.
- Pulseaudio has been replaced by the Pipewire multimedia server and WirePlumber sound manager for sound management.
- An option to check the integrity of the media has been added to the boot menu of the Live-assembly.
- The screen reader Orca and a utility to enlarge selected areas of the screen have been included for users with vision problems.
- The MX Tools utility, developed by the project, has been updated. PolicyKit is now used for launching additional privileges instead of MX-PKEXEC, with separate settings for each application.
- A new user Installed Packages application has been added, allowing the creation of a file with a list of installed applications. This file can be used to automate the installation of the same applications on another system or after updating to a new significant version.
- MX Snapshot utility settings have been modified to allow the loading of snapshots and to hide settings that may prevent the created Live system from booting on another computer.
- MX-Tweak utility now includes settings for customizing the design of XFCE and FLUXBOX.
- MX-Updater now offers the option to use NALA as a backend for installing packages instead of APT.
