Senior American Senator Ron Weiden has called on the US Ministry of Justice, Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to conduct an investigation into the recent hacking of Microsoft mail accounts used by key officials.
The compromised postal accounts belong to several prominent politicians, including US Finance Minister Gina Raymondo, US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns, and assistant US Secretary of State for East Asia Daniel Cretenbink. Weiden believes that the hacking was a result of security system flaws in Microsoft. The senator stresses that addressing the issue will require the combined efforts of the entire government.
Weiden is calling on CISA to assign the Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB), which has previously dealt with LOG4J problems and Lapsus $ hacks, to investigate the incident involving Microsoft.
Weiden highlights the importance of analyzing the company’s security practices and understanding why potential errors were not detected during the mandatory external auditing process for government contractors. The senator also urges the prosecutor’s office to consider potential violations of federal legislation by Microsoft.
Despite allegations made by Microsoft and the NSA against the Chinese government, the Chinese embassy categorically denies any involvement in the hacking incident. Other US senators are also calling on the State Department to initiate an investigation into this incident.
