Apple Issues Urgent Webkit Patches

Apple Releases Corrected Emergency Safety Updates to Fix Webkit Vulnerability

Apple has released the corrected versions of emergency safety updates to address the vulnerability in Webkit that has been actively exploited by attackers. The initial patches were recalled on Monday due to issues with the display of certain websites in the Safari web browser.

“Apple is aware of the problem regarding recent emergency security updates potentially causing display issues on certain websites,” the company stated on Tuesday.

The company has now released the corrected versions of the updates and advised customers to remove the previous updates if they experience problems while browsing web pages after installation.

Apple did not disclose the exact cause behind the incorrect display of websites after installing iOS 16.5.1 (A), iPados 16.5.1 (A), and MacOS 13.4.1 (A). However, it is believed that this occurred because the new Safari user identifier, which includes the “(A)” designation, prevented the websites from recognizing it as a valid Safari version, leading to the error message “Browser is not supported.”

Today, Apple has started distributing the security updates iOS 16.5.1 (C), iPados 16.5.1 (C), and MacOS 13.4.1 (C), which resolve the issues related to web page display.

Apple frequently utilizes emergency security updates to address problems impacting iPhone, iPad, and other devices. This approach is particularly common in government organizations and corporate structures where strict adherence to security policies and the protection of confidential information are of paramount importance.
