Family Center Boosts Trust Rate, Fosters Child-Parent Dialogue

Discord Launches Family Center to Increase Transparency for Parents

Discord, a popular application among video game enthusiasts, is taking steps to increase transparency and safety for parents. The company has launched a new tool called Family Center, which aims to provide parents with more information about their children’s activities in the virtual space.

The Family Center tool can only be used if the teenager gives their voluntary consent. If the teenager agrees, their parent or guardian will have access to information such as recently added friends, communities the child is part of, and the names and avatars of people they communicate with through messages or in personal and group chats.

All the information will be displayed on a special application panel, with statistics from the last seven days. Additionally, parents will receive weekly reports via email.

However, it’s important to note that the tool does not allow parents to spy or eavesdrop on their child’s conversations. Its purpose is to increase awareness and foster productive discussions about safe internet usage.

In order to connect to their child’s account, the parent must request a special QR code from them. The code needs to be scanned through the Discord application, and the teenager must approve the connection. This multi-stage process ensures open communication and consent between the parent and child before granting access to data.

“In the same way parents know their teenager’s friends and social circles at school, the Family Center helps them understand what their children are doing on Discord,” stated the company in a blog post. “Our goal is to facilitate productive dialogue about online safety and create mutually beneficial ways to navigate the digital world.”

Discord is not the only company implementing such programs to encourage parent-child dialogues. Last year, Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, introduced a new subscription plan for players under 13 years old. This plan limits certain functions, such as text and voice chat, until the parent or guardian gives consent.
