The developers of the project kde neon have introduced new experimental assemblies called KDE Neon Unstable Edition. These assemblies are based on the KDE Plasma 6 shell, offering a user environment with the latest versions of programs and components of KDE. Currently, the user environment in KDE Neon assemblies with Plasma 6 is almost indistinguishable from assemblies with Plasma 5.
The key change in KDE 6 is the transition to QT 6, along with changes in some basic default settings and the provision of an updated set of basic libraries and the KDE Frameworks 6. KDE Frameworks 6 undergoes significant API processing. Currently, out of 658 KDE projects, 333 projects have implemented the ability to assemble with QT 6. However, there are still components that are not yet supported by QT 6, such as Akonadi, Akregator, Colord-Kde, Dolphin, Falkon, Kdevelop, KGET, KGPG, KOMARE, KOPETE, Korganizer, Ktorrent, Okular, Aura-Browser, and Discover. The release of KDE Plasma 6 is expected in the fall of 2023.
