LibreOffice Project Adopts Tied Dates

In accordance with the previously approved plan, the Libreoffice project moved to a new version of the version numbering, tied to the dates and reflecting the year and the month of the formation of the release.
The next after Libreoffice 7.6 significant release will be Libreoffice 24.2, the version of which reflects the release in February 2024. It will be followed by release 24.8, scheduled for August 2024.
Solution accepted during considerations
The expediency of creating the Libreoffice 8.0 branch, during which the developers came to the conclusion that in recent years the code base of the project has been developing gradually with the maintenance of reverse compatibility, therefore Change of the first digit in the version number is more likely a formal step than the initially conceived indicator of cardinal changes or violation of reverse compatibility. Alternative schemes considered the use of the format indicating the full year (2024.2, 2024.8, etc.) and a constant increase in the first number in the room (8.0, 9.0, 10.0, etc.).
Staffing on the basis of the release date is more convenient for users who can immediately assess the relevance of the version used and understand the time of its formation.
For developers, the new scheme is suitable due to the planned model of preparation of issues, in which the date of the next release is initially known (Libreoffice releases are released in February and August). In addition, the
