The release of the operating system Chrome OS 116 is now available. It is based on the Linux core, UPSTART system manager, EBUILD/PORTAGE assembly, and open components of Chrome 116. While Chrome OS primarily relies on web applications instead of standard programs, it includes a full-fledged multi-user interface, desktop, and taskbar. The source texts for Chrome OS are distributed under the free license Apache 2.0. The assembly of Chrome OS 116 is available for a majority of relevant models of chromebooks, while Chrome OS Flex is recommended for use on ordinary computers.
The main changes in Chrome OS 116 include:
- In the file manager, support has been added for simultaneously searching for files on a local drive and in the cloud storage of Google Drive. Additionally, tools for configuring the search have been expanded.
- The automatic correction feature has been improved to correct typos and errors as text is being entered. By default, auto-correction is enabled for English, and it can now be used with both virtual and regular keyboards.
- Device settings have been updated with a simplified interface to assist new users transitioning from other operating systems. The number of available settings for personalizing the environment has been increased, improving flexibility during device configuration. Options for touchpad scrolling and screen size adjustment have been added.
- An interface for setting up keyboards with RGB lighting has been introduced. Users can now assign different colors to different areas of backlight on the keyboard. This feature is supported by devices such as IDEAPAD GAMING ChROMEBOOK, HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook, Acer Chromebook 516 GE, and ASUS CHROMEBOOK CX34 FLIP.
- Chrome now supports text recognition on images, allowing conversion into ordinary text and use in screen readers. This feature is particularly beneficial for individuals with vision problems, as it enables them to listen to the contents of PDFs that do not support text export.
