Artificial intelligence (AI) could have a greater impact on Britain than the industrial revolution, according to the country’s Deputy Prime Minister, Oliver Dauden. Dauden has warned that hackers may exploit AI technologies to gain access to sensitive government information, as reported by The Guardian.
Dauden stated in an interview with Times that AI is capable of enhancing labor efficiency and performing mundane tasks. He declared, “A total revolution is approaching. It will completely transform almost every aspect of our lives in the coming years, and in some cases, even months. This revolutionary change will occur much faster and on a larger scale than previous revolutions, such as the invention of the internal combustion engine or the industrial revolution.”
The Prime Minister expressed his belief that AI would enable governments to make faster decisions in the future. An example of this is already evident in the British Home Office’s utilization of AI for processing asylum applications. Additionally, this technology can be employed to reduce the bureaucratic workload faced by government ministers. However, Dauden emphasized that ministers would never delegate decision-making to AI outsourcing.
Dauden also cautioned that terrorists could exploit AI to acquire knowledge about hazardous materials or execute large-scale hacker attacks. He referred to recent attacks on the election commission and police in Northern Ireland, which led to the publication of personal information belonging to over 10,000 officers and police personnel.
The impact of AI on society can be both positive and negative, necessitating the involvement of not just technical specialists but everyone in its development.
Dauden admitted that the growth of AI would require a significant restructuring of the economy. He assured that the government would strive to protect the interests of the people during this transition, likening the spread of AI to the invention of the car.
