Community Takes Control of VIM Project

Revival of VIM Text Editor Development Led by New Team

In a significant development, the VIM text editor, which has remained without any updates following the demise of Brahm Dolinar (BRAM MOOLENAAR), is now being revived by a new team. Community members and relatives of Brahm Moolenara recently transmitted the repository, the site, and elements of the infrastructure to representatives of the community, enabling the revival of VIM development.

The responsibility of managing and leading the development of the VIM text editor is now taken on by a group of highly active developers. The team includes Ken Takata, Christian Brabandt, Egapan Lakshmanan, Dominic Pelle, and @zertzjq. Together, they form the collective managing council and make decisions related to the development of the project. @MATTN, the author of emmet-vim, and @zeertzjq, the author of Neovim, are also part of the team.

The new team has already settled into their roles and committed to the project, with renewed publication of intermediate issues. They have also begun the preparation for the next significant release of VIM 9.1, which will be dedicated to honoring Brahm Moolenara. Additionally, a new discussion platform has been launched on Github to facilitate communication among the community members and developers.

Immediate plans include software updates to ensure the smooth operation of the VIM website, which is currently using an unsupported PHP 5 branch. The team also aims to modernize the release formation process for future updates of the text editor.
