Developers from Mozilla announced that Firefox for Android will soon support all the add-ons available for Firefox in the Addons.mozilla.org (AMO) catalog. This move will make Firefox for Android the first mobile browser to offer full support for an open ecosystem of add-ons. The implementation of this plan is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year, with the exact date set to be announced in early September.
Currently, Firefox for Android only supports a limited number of add-ons, which are integrated into the main stream upon installation. To ensure that any errors in the add-ons do not affect the stability of the browser, Firefox night assemblies for Android have included a multi-processing mode. This mode allows the add-ons to run in a separate process, minimizing their impact on the user interface and webpage rendering.
The developers of Firefox desktop add-ons are advised to optimize and adapt their products for the mobile version. They are encouraged to transition their add-ons from the permanent background execution model (extension.getBackgroundPage) to the runtime.onMessage.addListener method.
