Roskomnadzor, the Russian government agency responsible for overseeing communication and media, has announced that it will be conducting tests on Apple devices and other foreign manufacturers to ensure safe access to Russian services. The Center for Monitoring and Management of General Use (TsMU SSOP) at RKN will be assisting with the testing process.
In a statement, the department’s press service explained that TsMU SSOP GRCHC conducts research on protocols and devices in order to ensure stable and secure access to Russian digital services.
RKN representatives have highlighted that the main network protocols of internet services are currently developed by foreign companies. They stressed the need for Russia’s digital economy to have basic network protocols and software libraries that guarantee the integrity, stability, and safety of data, information, and the services themselves.
Last month, the Main Radio Frequency Center (GRCHC), a part of Roskomnadzor, purchased 54 mobile devices from various foreign manufacturers. The purpose of this procurement was to conduct research on the protocols used to ensure the sustainable, safe, and reliable functioning of the internet in Russia, according to a representative from GRCHC.
However, on August 2, the press service of Roskomnadzor denied rumors that the sale of Apple devices could be prohibited in Russia following the inspections conducted by the department.
