The American agency DARPA, known for its futuristic defense research, has announced a partnership with PowerLight Technologies, a company specializing in energy transmission systems. Together, they are working on the creation of an innovative program called “Persistent Optical Wireless Energy Relay” (Power).
The main objective of the Power program is to establish a dynamic network for wireless energy transmission capable of delivering power to soldiers at the speed of light. This technology aims to expand the multi-road energy transmission network across various fields. At the core of this program is the PowerLight technology, which can convert kilowatts of electricity into powerful directed light rays.
Wireless Energy Transmission: How Does It Work?
The PowerLight energy transmission technology works by converting electricity into photons, which are then used to create a concentrated laser beam. This beam is directed towards a specialized solar panel, where it is converted back into electricity.
In addition to this, PowerLight has also developed energy transmission through optical fibers and an advanced security system. These features make their technologies attractive not only for military applications but also for industrial purposes.
Why Does the Military Need This?
One of the main challenges faced by the military is the transfer of energy to hard-to-reach locations, such as remote areas of the battlefield or airborne drones. PowerLight also highlights the potential application of their technology in space, particularly considering the limitations associated with traditional fuel sources.
Prospects for Application
PowerLight envisions opportunities for their technology not only in the military sector but also in the commercial sector, including the needs of 5G networks, drones, and other technologies. The concept of transmitting energy without infrastructure, from production to consumption, offers prospects for developing countries and for the transfer of energy from space to Earth.
Richard Gustafson, CEO of PowerLight, expressed his belief that this technology “can be a game-changer for economic development and the future of our life beyond this planet.”
