KDE Project Announcement: Release of New Branch Scheduled for February 2024
The developers of the KDE project have announced that the release of the new branch is scheduled for February 2024. Originally, the release of KDE Plasma 6, the user environment, and a set of libraries KDE Frameworks 6 was intended to be published this fall. However, more work than expected caused delays. As a result, in November 2023, the alpha output of KDE 6 with a soft freezing of changes will be published, followed by the beta release in December, and the candidate for releases in January.
In conjunction with KDE Plasma 6 and KDE Frameworks 6, the developers also plan to publish a significant release of KDE Gear’s application set, translated to QT6. Unfortunately, the December significant update KDE Gear 23.12 will be missed due to the additional time required to test the transition to the new QT6 branch.
The key change in KDE 6 is the transition to QT 6, along with changes in some basic default settings and the provision of an updated basic libraries set. KDE Frameworks 6, which forms the KDE software glass, will undergo a significant processing of the API. Currently, out of 529 KDE projects, 380 projects have implemented the ability to assemble with Qt 6. However, there are still components that have not yet been supported by Qt 6, including Colord-Kde, Falkon, Kdevelop, Kget, Konqueror, Kopete, Konversation, Ktorrent, Okular, Aura-Browser, Amarok, Digikam, and Calligra.
