Google has started rolling out the Proofread feature to users of the beta version of its GBOARD keyboard for Android. This new function utilizes generative AI to check text for spelling and grammatical errors in real time.
The Proofread option was spotted in the GBOARD 13.4 version, which is currently in the beta testing phase. In the keyboard’s tool panel, users can find the function represented by the Google symbol for generative AI and the message “Fix it”. Once activated, the text is sent to Google servers for processing. After processing, GBOARD provides suggested adjustments to correct spelling or grammatical errors, as well as add punctuation.
While the new function offers obvious advantages, it would be more convenient if Google could process the text locally without sending it to their servers. It is possible that this aspect may be addressed in future updates.
It is worth mentioning that Google is also working on developing other generative AI-based features for GBOARD. Among them are the creation of AI-generated stickers and the “Tone” function, which will assist in rephrasing messages in different styles, such as translating from formal to informal.
