Linux from Scratch 12.0 Released

The new leaders of the Linux from Scratch (LFS) and Beyond Linux from Scratch (BLFS) manuals, along with the editors of LFS and BLFS, have been presented with the Systemd system manager. Linux from Scratch provides instructions for creating a base Linux system from scratch, using the initial texts of necessary software. Beyond Linux from Scratch supplements LFS instructions with information on assembling and setting up various software packages in different areas of application.

In the latest version, Linux from Scratch 12.0, there have been updates to 38 packages, including GCC 13.2.0.0.0.0, Glibc 2.38, Linux 6.4.12, Systemd 254 (Sysvinit version), Coreutils 9.3, Binutils 2.41, Util-Linux 2.39.1, Make 4.4.1, Meson 1.2.1, Openssl 3.1.2, Perl 5.38.0, Python 3.11.4, and VIM-9.0.1677. The Libxcrypt library has been moved from Glibc to a separate package. The Sysvinit initialization system now uses UDEV 254 from Systemd instead of EuDEV. PKGCONF tools have been added in place of PKG-Config. The Flit-Core Python Module has been included as a dependency in the new version of the Wheel module. Loading script errors have been fixed, and editorial work has been done throughout the book to improve explanatory materials.

Beyond Linux from Scratch 12.0 includes 1543 updates, featuring GNOME 44, XFCE 4.18.1, KDE Plasma 5.27.7, KDE GEARS 23.08, LIBREOFFICE 7.6, FMPEG 6.0, Inkscape 1.3, Thunderbird 115.2.0, Firefox 115.2.0, Seamonkey 2.53.17, Gimp 2.10.34, Icewm 3.4.1, Mesa 23.1.6, GTK 4.12, Mariadb 10.11.4, PostgreSQL 15.4, SQLite 3.42.0, Postfix 3.8.1, Exim 4.96, BIND 9.18.18, and Apache httpd 2.4.57.
